Definition

What does tambookie mean?

tambookie
The AbaThembu (abaThembu ababhuzu-bhuzu, abanisi bemvula ilanga libalele) was one of the Xhosa-states in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. According to Xhosa oral tradition, the AbaThembu migrated along the east coast of Southern Africa before settling in the Southern Cape. The earliest known Thembu royal ancestor is Chief Mbulali KaNazinzaba who led his people out of what was later to became the South African province of Natal to Dedesi in the Transkei region of Xhosaland. Like all Xhosa states, the abaThembu paid tribute to the amaTshawe clan who were paramount to the entire Xhosa nation. They emerged as a more powerful state during the reign of King Ngubengcuka. Famous AbaThembus include Prince Nelson Mandela, whose father was a reigning nobleman from a junior branch of the AmaMadiba clan of kings, and Prince Walter Sisulu.
