Definition
What does bangash mean?
- Bangash
- The Bangash or Bungish (Pashto: بنګښ; also spelled Bangakh) are a tribe of ethnic Pashtuns. Their traditional homeland, historically known as "Bangash district," stretches from Kohat to Tall and Spīn Ghar in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, as well as smaller parts of Paktia, Afghanistan. The Bangash are also settled in large numbers in Uttar Pradesh, India, especially in the city of Farrukhabad, which was founded in 1714 by Nawab Muhammad Khan Bangash.Religiously, the Bangash population is almost evenly made up of both Shia Muslims and Sunni Muslims. Outside of their Muslim-majority, there are also some Bangash Sikhs, especially in Hangu, Upper Kurram, and Orakzai. The Bangash mostly speak a northern variety of Pashto similar to Afridi Pashto.
