Definition

What does shikara mean?

Shikara
The shikar is a type of wooden boat found on Dal Lake and other water bodies of Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir, India. Shikars are of varied sizes and are used for multiple purposes, including transportation of people. A usual shikar seats half-a-dozen people, with the driver paddling at the rear. Like the Venetian gondolas, they are a cultural symbol of Kashmir. Some shikars are still used for fishing, harvesting aquatic vegetation (usually for fodder), and transport, while most are covered with tarpaulins and are used by tourists. Some are used as floating homes by poor people. Shikara boat is also available in Kerala. Shikara in Alleppey are smaller in size and has a seating capacity of 4 - 20 people. Shikara can go through the narrow canals in backwaters in Alleppey.. The roof and walls of Shikara are carved with bamboo sheets and are beautiful epitome of handicraft work in elegant Kerala style.
