The Gilder Boys are a Tamil orientated street gang originating from Scarborough's Gilder Drive area in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Police claim that this gang works in collation with the once powerful VVT gang, to which founding members share a long history with. During the 1990s, Canadian born Tamil youths searching for an identity were influenced by older Tamil refugees who arrived in Canada during the late 1980's and early 1990's. Many of these refugees were former Tamil Guerrillas linked to revolutionary organizations loyal to the LTTE, and were known to have extensive paramilitary training in the use of automatic weapons and hand-to-hand combat, which catapulted them into a leadership role in established Tamil street gangs such as the VVT. Youth gangs such as the Gilder Boys were used in gang extortion rackets to collect "donations" from Tamil owned homes and businesses through out the GTA. Although there were many refugees loyal to the LTTE, there were also those who came to Canada as sworn enemies of the LTTE in their native land and imported their conflicts with them; influencing Canadian born Tamils to continue these deep rooted political rivalries, even though many of the youths held little to no connection to their ancestral homeland. Today, the Gilder Boys moniker has been adopted by a new generation of Tamil youths residing in or near by the low-rise apartments on Gilder Drive. However, sub-gangs, such as the Gilder Boys, are less focused on politics and more focused on criminal enterprises. Members are involved in array of criminal activity (with financial gain being the main goal) with their main source of income coming from fraud, currency counterfeiting and/or identity theft. Although this gang does not participate in the drug trade too often, some of its members are known to have done so. They are rivals of the AK Kannan and the Silver Springs Boys.
